Are you excited for mother’s day? Is it a big revenue generator for your business? This is my first mother’s day as a mom and I’ve been thinking a lot about failure (lol).
I went to the Ilana Glazer show last week which was surprisingly mostly about motherhood. She talked about how dads can make mistakes but moms can’t. When dads fuck up it’s okay cause you get “daddy issueszszzz”. When moms fuck up you get “issues with your mother”… much less sexy.
When I first started my web design business 4 years ago, I thought it would be a great idea to launch something called a ✨ website audit ✨. You would give me your website URL and I would send you…… (deep inhale)…… a detailed 50-page report with screenshots and pointers of everything you should change in the UX, Design and Strategy (huh?), redesigns of elements of your website and screenshots of what I think your site COULD look like (if you had my skills obviously), ANDDDDD a 25-minute Loom video reviewing the entire report (yawn) all packaged up nicely with a bow. It was priced at 1000$ (watatatatow).
I worked SO hard on this offer. Spent so much time creating the sales page and talking about it on sales calls.
I sold … one.
ONE AUDIT.
While I was sitting around waiting for this offer to magically appeal to my audience at the time of *ahem* yoga teachers & wellness practitioners, a birth doula client of mine offered some feedback.
She told me that the offer sounded SO overwhelming. She was like “WHY would I pay you 1000$ just to give me MORE work to do?!” She also didn’t understand what “UX”, “Design” and “Strategy” were. Even though I knew I was providing a state-of-the-art recommendations, it was confusing to her and she didn’t understand what the value was. She also said she would never in a million years sit down to read a 50-page report about her website… (what do I take her for, a web designer?!) And on top of that, I was telling her everything she did WRONG? Wow way to go, Drea for boosting the self esteem of yer favourite yoga teachers just doing their best out there.
So why am I telling you this?!
Well, because mistakes happen. And even though I messed up, I didn’t wallow in self-pity from Lauren’s feedback or let the crumbling of my ego lead me down a spiral of existential dread 🎀
I just scrapped the offer and moved on.
I learned that my expertise was in:
the connection I have with my community, not hiding behind a report
the magic of the end result, not showing all the behind the scenes technical details
empowering you to feel that your website can be EASY, not making it feel complicated
Now I offer a 90-minute glow-up session where we audit your website TOGETHER live on a call, and instead of receiving a 50-page report, you’ll just get a digestible checklist & action plan that we established together. It won’t feel overwhelming, we’ll prioritize what you should fix based on YOUR personal business goals over a conversation. Oh and I dropped the price to 350 $ (Canadian dollars — which is basically like monopoly money).
The moral of the story is.. if you fuck up, it’s okay. You can start over and re-launch. Don’t let the negative feedback turn into “issues with your mother”. Work your magic and turn it into sexy “daddy issueszszsz” instead.
Wow Drea, what an inspiring mother’s day message !!!!!!
